EXPELLED BJP leader and former Chief Minister Uma Bharti’s Janadesh Yatra received a tumultuous welcome by her supporters and sympathisers in the City today.

As the sanyasin-turned-politician resumed her Janadesh Yatra, thousands of supporters followed her on the Yatra route from Bada Ganpati to Krishnapura Chhatri late this evening. Bharti reached Bada Ganpati at around 7 pm and resumed her Yatra after paying obeisance at the Ganesh temple. There was enthusiasm among the supporters who had started gathering at Bada Ganpati right through early evening.

Hundreds of welcome gates were erected on both side of the road throughout the Yatra route in the City to welcome the mercurial leader as she resumed her Yatra in an open jeep. Though Uma was to undertake the Yatra on foot from Bada Ganpati to Krishnapura Chhatri, later she changed her plan, as she was suffering from weakness.

The enthusiastic supporters burst firecrackers all through the Yatra route and the local residents and other sympathisers showered flower petals on Uma as her jeep inched towards Rajwada crisscrossing the thickly populated colonies of the area. Hundreds of saffron-clad women accompanied the Janadesh Yatra. Another major attraction of the Yatra was the presence of hundreds of Muslim community members who actively participated.

Earlier, Bharti was accorded a warm welcome on her arrival at the Indore railway station at noon. The sanyasin-turned-politician was accompanied by blue-eyed boy Prahlad Patel.

The overzealous supporters of the leader had arrived in large numbers at the railway station from different parts of the City to welcome her. As the Nizamuddin-Indore Inter-city Express scratched to a halt at the railway station, the slogan-chanting supporters rushed to the coach from where Uma Bharti was reciprocating to the enthusiasm of the waiting supporters by waving. As Uma alighted from the train, supporters vied with each other to touch her feet.

Addressing the workers at the railway station, Uma called upon them to believe in an ideology and have discipline. The two major ills that are plaguing the BJP now were lack of ideology and discipline, she said. ‘‘There are leaders in the BJP who do not even come out of the office room. A lot of them have become leaders by showing their face in front of LK Advani and AB Vajpayee. I cannot tolerate that kind of culture,” she said.

From the railway station, she left for Residency Kothi where she was closeted with her supporters till evening. In the evening, she embarked upon her Janadesh Yatra from Bada Ganpati.
