The male beggar was found profusely bleeding with his head smashed on a road at Bhangagarh area of Guwahati city this morning raising suspicion that the elusive 'killer', dubbed as 'stoneman', could be behind the act.

He was admitted to Guwahati Medical College in serious condition.

A day before, another male beggar was found dead with head injuries, possibly inflicted by a sharp weapon, near the Shiva Temple at Manipuri Basti area.

The assailant, who had been targetting pavement dwellers, killed six vagrants in the city in past few days and injured five others using the same modus operandi of either hitting the unsuspecting men below the ear on both sides of the head or causing serious injury to take away their power of speech.

Personal gains did not seem to be the motive behind the attacks as the mysterious killer did not part with the little cash or meagre belongings of the beggars.

A baffled police administration is now grappling with the little clues behind the similar attacks.
