As per information, a 65-year old woman was killed by lightning in Sarava village in Kachawa area on Monday evening while a 40-year old man was crushed to death by a speeding truck when he was trying to escape the thunder-storm in Bhadohi district.
Normal power supply and communication system were paralysed and several areas of the district witnessed almost a black-out throughout Monday night.
Electricity poles and trees were uprooted by the thunderstorm.
A giant tree was uprooted in Kamachcha on Monday evening due to which normal traffic on the busy Lanka-Cantt route was thrown out of gear till Tuesday noon. Similar was the situation in other areas where trees and electricity poles were uprooted.
Wheat and mango crop suffered a major loss due to the storm in the entire eastern Uttar Pradesh. The wheat harvest lying in the fields was akso damaged. Besides, the standing crops in the field were also adversely affected.
Faculty member in the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in BHU, Prof Ramesh Chand said that Mondays’ storm would pose various difficulties for farmers in eastern UP. He said that around 15 to 20 per cent mango crop was damaged due to this storm. He said that the thunderstorm had also affected the wheat crop.
Eminent meteorologist and former faculty member in the Geology Department of Banaras Hindu University, Prof BRD Gupta said that Monday’s storm was the result of western disturbances.
He said that this thunderstorm was a common phenomenon in the month of March and April and this situation would not continue for long.
