The quake struck at 18:16 pm (1646 IST) local time and was centred about 70 kilometres northwest of Nias' main town of Gunung Sitoli, said Fauzi of the meteorological agency in Jakarta.

He said the quake was 33 kilometres under the sea.

"There should not be any fear for a tsunami but we are monitoring the situation as it progresses," Fauzi said.

A 7.7-strength undersea temblor earlier this month triggered a tsunami that lashed the south coast of Java island, killing more than 600 people.
