Students? council polls peaceful

IN CONTRAST to the violence witnessed in other parts of the State, the students? council polls in the Capital remained peaceful, rather quite dull, with hardly any enthusiasm amongst students. The excitement was provided by a bomb hoax at the Hamidia College. The bomb disposal squad of police only found some crackers in one of the college rooms.

The main students’ organisations – National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — made counter claims regarding the number of winning candidates who were supported by them at State level as well as in the Capital colleges. The elections were held in 26 colleges and this time autonomous colleges like Government Sarojini Naidu Girls Autonomous PG College (Nutan College), MLB College, Institute of Excellence in Higher Education (IEHE) and State Law College were conspicuous in their abstinence from the process..

In most of other colleges in the City, too, the atmosphere remained quite dull with very low students turnout. As the elections were held in indirect method in most of the colleges, only the candidates and office-bearers of the various societies elected during the first phase on Friday – who were to vote for the office-bearers of the students’ councils — were present.

This led to most of the office-bearers being elected unanimously. Few of the other students bothered to turn up at the college – showing total disinterest towards the process. The class representatives – nominated on the basis of merit and the office-bearers of various societies — elected four office-bearers to the college councils – namely the president,
vice-president, secretary and joint secretary.

Commotion ensued at the Hamidia College at around 4 pm when the rumours spread about bomb on the college campus. The college authorities immediately summoned the police who arrived with bomb disposal squad and got the entire campus emptied. After a thorough search however, only some crackers were recovered from Room Number H-9.
