SAMAJWADI PARTY student leaders celebrated Chief Minister Mulayam Singh’s birthday at the prestigious Malviya Hall in Lucknow University (LU). But, now they are bent upon spoiling the 86th Foundation Day celebration to be held on Saturday. Reason: They are agitated over LU’s decision to hold students’ union elections as per Supreme Court guidelines. After having succeeded in forcing Anthropology Department to shift the venue of first DN Majumdar Memorial Lecture from LU to a hotel, LU students’ leaders, mostly loyal to the SP, are working overtime to spoil the foundation day function. For these students’ leaders celebration of CM’s birthday on campus was their birth right but LU has no authority to celebrate the foundation day.

This “narrow-minded” attitude of the student leaders has not only left organisers dejected but also common teachers and students deeply disappointed. With student leaders having threatened to disrupt the function, varsity administration are taking no chance to make unprecedented security arrangements for Saturday’s gala function which would see the presence of several distinguished alumnis’.
LU V-C RP Singh is said to have spoken to Chancellor-Governor TV Rajeswar on telephone who according to varsity officials have given his consent. LU has also informed district administration for making proper security arrangements. LU has an ambitious plan to celebrate its 86th foundation day in a grand way. They decided to felicitate 16 distinguished alumnis on the occasion.
They are Syed Sibte Razi, governor of Jharkhand, Dr Ashok Bajpai, minister in Mulayam Singh’s government, Justice Haider Abbas Raza, Lokayukta of Uttaranchal, RP Rastogi, former V-C of Benaras Hindu University, SR Hashim, professor emeritus at Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, New Delhi, PC Joshi, social activists, Kunwar Narain, poet and Zafar Ali Naqvi.
Others who would be honoured includes Krishna Kumar, director of IIM, Kozhikode, KS Valdiya, emeritus professor of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Anoop Jalota, bhajan singer; Navjeevan Rastogi, Rahul Dev, journalist; Giri Lal Gupta and HS Asthana. LU officials informed that almost all of them have confirmed their participation except three—Anoop Jalota, HS Asthana and KS Valiya—who will not be here due to their preoccupations.
After the felicitation function, there would a yet another simple function at LU Second Campus wherein Shankar Dayal Sharma Institute and Law building would be inaugurated. Senior most alumni GL Gupta would then inaugurate the Kala Mela at College of Arts and Craft in the evening. And finally there would be a Kathak dance presentation by Ruchi Khare at Malviya hall.
Unprecedented security arrangements have been made at LU. Senior police officials and district administration visited campus many a times to take a stock of the situation. However, varsity will remain close on Saturday on account of foundation day celebrations. Teachers have been directed to attend the function while entry on the campus would be given through gate number two.
