KPS Gill, the former top cop credited with controlling insurgency in Punjab, may be appointed advisor to the Governor during President's Rule in Bihar, well-informed sources said.

The sources said Gill, the former Director General of Punjab Police, could be appointed as advisor to Governor Buta Singh to help run the administration in a state infamous for its high crime rate and poor law and order.

Gill led operations against militants in Punjab over a decade ago. He was also security adviser to the Chief Minister after the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002.

Sources close to the Governor's office said that two or three names, including Gill's, were suggested for the post of special advisor to the Governor.

The other names include retired bureaucrat Vijay Shankar Dubey. "Dubey is known for his honest image and hard work. He has served Bihar for long," the sources said.

Singh recommended President's Rule in Bihar after none of the coalitions that fought the elections were able to get enough legislators to prove a majority in the state assembly.
