A court in Chennai, however, remanded Ameer Tawah in judicial custody for 15 days, following which he was taken to Puzhal jail.

Police said Tawah, 34, a Kerala-based travel agent, was held for breaching the security cordon and not as much for taking pictures of the minister.

In a statement issued in Delhi, Chidambaram said, “I was surprised and disappointed to learn that a person who reportedly attempted to take some pictures of me was detained… I did not know about the incident until the media reported it… I have asked my office to get in touch with the Tamil Nadu Police and request them to release the person.”
