After the Hindustan Times expose, a detailed investigation is under way and chances are that Aamir may be taken on remand in the near future. The investigation also aims at unmasking the sympathisers, most of them white-collared, who helped Aamir surrender on April 25 last.

According to sources, the local intelligence has identified seven persons so far.
Two of them are famous doctors, while one is a known social activist of a predominantly Muslim pocket and another an official. “

More names are likely to trickle in as the inquiry progresses,” said a source involved in the probe.

“We’re looking into the details of the case and the police can soon apply for Aamir’s remand,” he added. Barely four days back, the government had sought a detailed report of the surrender from the district administration.

The local intelligence unit has concluded in its report that remand of Aamir is a must given the nature of the charges against him. The report outlines all the cases registered against Aamir at Chamangunj, Becongunj, Kotwali, Bajaria and Swaroop Nagar police stations.

He is described as a repository of vital information related to SIMI’s network and future plans. It is said his remand may help the police to get the much needed inputs on these two most important aspects.

Another inquiry is entrusted to the state intelligence to find out the details of the surrender, who arranged it and how come SIMI’s national executive was formed in Aligarh?

According to sources, the teams have shortlisted seven names. Of these, three have already been questioned in the last three days. All these persons were in touch with Mohd Aamir directly or indirectly and helped him surrender before the metropolitan magistrate (IV).

The investigators are peeling layers off the role of the Becongunj police (which kept Aamir for a night) and a celebrated politician.

For record, Aamir faces charges of treason and is alleged to be the man behind the riots that rocked the city on March 16, 2001.

After being on the run for five years, on April 25 he surrendered in court and even secured bail in most of the cases, much to embarrassment of the State government.
