A teacher committed suicide after being ridiculed at a village reconciliation meeting and asked to pay Rs one lakh for allegedly having illicit relations with a married woman at Sagardighi in Murshidabad district on Sunday.

A top district police officer said Dilip Mondal consumed pesticide after being publicly abused at the meeting (Salishi Sabha) attended by 'village heads' where he was also asked to cough up Rs one lakh as compensation for "tarnishing the image" of the area and one Asim Majhi, whose residence he had visited and allegedly met his wife several times.

After last night's humiliation, Mondal, who did not talk to anyone, came back to his residence.

His body was found with an empty pesticide bottle lying nearby after neighbours broke open the bolted door in presence of the police.

Based on the suicide note, lying on the side of the body, police were on the lookout of Majhi.
