Sharma expressed these views at the inaugural session of the golden jubilee celebrations of the association at the Convocation Hall of the Deen Dayal Upadhyayay Gorakhpur University.
Sharma voiced concern over declining number of students in government schools.
He said government teachers should introspect why they failed to attract students despite being paid handsome salaries. Teachers in private schools were getting nominal payment, but the credibility of private schools and their teachers was far greater, he added.
Sharma spoke about the prolonged struggle of the teachers’ association and their unity, which played a significant role in bettering the lot of teachers.
Teachers were in a much better position than other government employees, he added.
Sharma called upon the teachers to regain the faith of the people. He said teachers were nation-builders and they should be devoted to their jobs.
He said the demand for constituting the Sixth Pay Commission was pending before the government and expressed hope that unity among the teachers would force the government to constitute the commission.
State secretary of the association and MLC Panchanan Rai cautioned teachers about challenges posed by capitalist forces in the age of globalisation.
He said specialist teachers, shiksha mitras, part-time teachers and stipend teachers’ posts had been created by the government, which was all set to shirk its responsibility to provide education to every citizen.
Member of Legislative Council Dr YD Singh, Devi Dayal Shastri, Rambahadur Singh, Suresh Tiwari, Subhash Chandra Sharma, Jagveer Kishor Singh, Shyam Narain and many others also expressed their views on the occasion.
They said teachers’ associations would continue their struggle in the coming days and demand regularisation of services of teachers in unaided schools.
