Usually the winters are known to be the season of carrots and cabbages, cauliflowers and capsicum. Foodies revel in the availability of such numerous varieties which is a treat for the taste buds.

But the environmental disturbances will affect the growth of these vegetables and fruits including the grains, claim experts.

According to Prof Dinanath Shukla of AU’s Botany Department, temperature fluctuation will be having its negative effect. "Hybrid varieties could somehow be able to save themselves from the negative impact. The region failed to have normal amount of rainfall this year and the abnormalcy had its impact on the growth of paddy.

By this time of the year we were supposed to have low temperatures which triggers the growth but again the condition is just the reverse. So definitely the normal growth of seasonal fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses and oil seeds will be hampered if for a few days we experience high temperature and the next week we wrap ourselves in woollen sheets. Even if the growth is not hampered to a greater degree then too the condition will influence its quality in terms of its nutritional value, taste and size," added Prof Shukla. Added to it, if there are hail storm and frost then the plants will be spoiled and their growth will be obstructed.

"Any type of condition which tends to weaken the plants is likely to result in various diseases in the fruits and vegetables which will rotten them and the product will no be able to gain its normal size. As far as the quality is concerned we could say that a particular fruit rich in Vitamin C will have less of it than its normal content," said Prof Shukla.

According to weather experts the temperature will again rise in the next few days and proper arrival of winters is still 15-20 days away.
