The government is taking the present New Year terror alert in Mumbai “very seriously”, said a senior government source. He said New Delhi had “very specific information” including names, dates of entry and potential targets.

The home ministry had on Monday issued a country-wide terror alert, especially for Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Goa and Bangalore, after getting intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba was planning to strike.

According to intelligence inputs, LeT teams have already entered Mumbai and Ahmedabad and may strike at any time. The inputs also suggested that the terrorists could try to target one of the properties of the Taj group of hotels in Mumbai.

Software hub Bangalore and tourist paradise Goa are also on the target list.

Any attack in the last few days of December would be an unfortunate end to a year that has been relatively free of major terrorist activity.

The only exception has been violence by Left-wing extremists in the form of Naxal fighting, said the source.
