Thane District Rail Passengers Association President Om Prakash Sharma, addressing a press conference on the 25th anniversary of the association, said that the district was a 'model' with as many as seven municipal corporations and four municipal councils.

A major portion of the district is a tribal region and has been neglected, he alleged.

"The population of the district has already crossed 1.5 crores. It is high time the government pays attention to the woes of the tribals and make available facilities for their all round development and economic upliftment," Sharma said.

The rural and tribal region can develop only by providing a new link between Dahanu and Kalyan. This will link the rural region of the district with the urban and give fillip to its development, he said.

The route can cover Dahanu-Vikramgadh-Wada-Kudus-Ambadi Road-Angaon-Padgha-Kalyan, spread over 100 km and can cater to a population of more than 25 lakh tribals in as many as five tribal talukas of the district, Sharma added.

Also present on the occasion were office bearers of the Association, Dr R T Rathod (former Additional DGP) and Suresh Divedi (Former Addl District Judge).
