Students of Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University take the Holi slogan ‘Bura na maano, Holi hai’ a tad too literally. Today, both campuses will turn into canvases of unregulated colour. While splashing colour will be a common sight, it is the uncommon revelry which makes these the hottest celebrations in town to attend today.
In JNU, celebrations began yesterday with a nightlong chaat sammelan which took place in the Jhelum hostel lawns. The symposium honoured poets and orators who could chaato (campus slang for faff) the audience for the longest time. That will be followed today by students consuming bhaang, which is available in all hostels. Don’t be surprised if you find topless boys around noon in the campus. Shirts are not spared during the celebrations.
The Jhelum lawns will also play host to the matki phodo game, where both foreign and Indian students participate, in what is touted as the best campus party in Delhi.
In the University of Delhi, hostellers are known to add chutzpah to the spirit of Holi. Pits will be dug in various college hostels and filled with colour, muck and all things unimaginable. This is where students are dipped! Be warned in case you plan to join them, sometimes guys even pee in this pit and then dunk people into the resulting slush.
