The car, a Ford Fiesta, was found abandoned at Pasial village near Behrampur in Gurdaspur district.

Locals saw the abandoned car on the roadside in the morning and immediately informed the police.

The three youths who had snatched car from Gaurav Pathania of Bani Lodhi village on Tuesday evening were reportedly seen by a resident of Behrampur on Wednesday.

On seeing a police naka (checkpoint), the three young men abandoned the car and fled, with police unable to catch them.

DSP Ranjit Singh said that the Gurdaspur Police had contacted their Pathankot counterparts after recovering the car which matched the details provided to them by the car owner.

He said a search was on for the three, who spoke Punjabi and seemed to either be from Pathankot or Gurdaspur. He ruled out any terror angle.

The police have been on high alert ever since Pathankot airbase was attacked by terrorists earlier in January.
