Following a tip-off about militants staying along with a woman in the house of a contractor in village Dhara Chaka in Prem Nagar area of the district, police and security forces laid a cordon off the hideout at about 0545 hours, police officials said.

On seeing the security men closing in, militants first hurled grenades and then fired at them who fired back triggering the gunbattle, Doda SSP Prabhat Singh told PTI.

Two militants were killed while a woman OGW staying with them in the hideout who was also the widow of a dreaded militant was critically wounded in the gunbattle.

While the slain militants have been identified as Suhel and Ishaq Khan of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, the woman OGW has been identified as Shakeela who was allegedly involved in a relationship with the two ultras.

Earlier, the security forces had thought Shakeela had also died in the encounter but when the bodies were recovered she was found alive and rushed to a hospital, Singh said.

Two AK rifles, magazines, grenades and some explosive material were recovered from the scene of the encounter.

In another encounter with police, one more HM militant identified as Mohmmad Hussain alias Gulzar, operating in the district for a few years, was killed in Dessa area of the district late this afternoon, DIG Doda-Kishtwar range, Himant Lohia said.
