The bus, carrying 16 passengers, was on its way to Rishikesh from New Tehri when it fell into the 100-meter-deep pit, killing two persons on the spot. Another person succumbed to his injuries later in a hospital.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital, where the condition of two of them is stated to be serious, they said.

The mishap apparently occurred after the vehicle's breaks failed to respond, police said.

Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna has expressed grief over the accident and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The chief minister also directed the Tehri District administration to provide an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 25,000 to the seriously injured and Rs 5000 to those who received minor injuries.
