Thunderstorms kill 28 in Uttar Pradesh

The thunderstorms left behind a trail of destruction uprooting trees and collapsing several houses.

At least 28 people were killed due to thunderstorms across Uttar Pradesh on Friday evening, which left a trail of destruction uprooting trees and leading to the collapse of several houses.

The storms also affected the communication network of the state as telephone and electric poles were also uprooted besides disrupting vehicular traffic, police said on Saturday.

Seven persons were killed during a thunderstorm that uprooted trees and flattened mud houses in various parts of Bhadohi district on Friday evening, police said.

Nine deaths were reported from Sitapur, Baharaich, Gonda and Sultanpur districts in the thunderstorm.

As many as 12 people died in Sonebhadra, Ballia, Deoria, Kushinagar and Maharajganj district, they said.

Thousands of trees and mud houses were brought down by the high velocity winds that lashed parts of state and more than a dozen people were injured in the storm.

The district administration of Bhadohi had announced ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the next kin of the dead, they said.
