In two month’s time, Mumbai’s Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) will have upgraded equipment for its combat wing — the Quick Response Team (QRT) — typically called to handle hostage situations.

The team already has one night-vision goggles, and orders were placed last month for German-made Heckler and Koch MP5 sub-machine guns and long-range sniper rifles, sources told the Hindustan Times. More night-vision goggles are on the way.

The MP5 sub-machine guns are handy in ambush and rescue operations, the snipers are said to be the most reliable tools for long-range targets.

ATS chief Inspector General Hemant Karkare, said: “It’s a team of extremely well-trained officers. Our efforts are to improve its firepower.”

At present, the unit uses AK series assault rifles and Austrian-made Glok pistols for close combats, said Inspector J.O. Thokal, QRT. “Advanced weaponry will enhance our strike range.”
