A top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist was killed in an encounter in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, a defence spokesman said.

Acting on a tip off, troops of seven Rashtriya Rifles cordoned Sangam village of Khundroo in Achabal area of Anantnag district on Monday morning, the spokesman said.

The search party came under fire from hiding ultras and in the ensuing gunbattle a hardcore Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist code named Sameer was killed, the spokesman said, adding an AK rifle and some ammunition were recovered from his possession.

The killing of Sameer, who was active in the district for the past 14 years, was a major setback to the outfit, he said.

The search operation in the village was still continuing and further details are awaited, he added.
