He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The Mahim police on Saturday arrested the driver, Nirmal Singh Rathod (38), of a tourist bus for rash and negligent driving.

The police said the deceased, Suhas Sadanand Chavhan (35), was a constable attached to the Malad division of the traffic police.

The officials said that on Saturday, Chavhan left his residence in Mahim police quarters at around 9.30 am.

He was on his way to Mahim police station to board a train for Malad to join his duty.

As he was passing through Sion-Dharavi, a tourist bus, which was coming from Gujarat hit the constable from the rear side.

“The constable fell on the road, sustaining serious head injuries,” said Police Sub-Inspector Ramdas Rode of the Mahim police station.

A police patrolling team, which was passing through the area, immediately halted at the spot and rushed the constable to Bhabha hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The officials said that the police team stopped the bus, and caught the driver who was trying to flee. There were passengers onboard the bus.

Chavhan is survived by a wife and a one-year-old daughter. Family sources said the wife is six months pregnant with their second child.
