Q: After spending seven years in Gurgaon, how do you rate traffic management in the Millennium City?
A lot of efforts are being made to improve traffic management in Gurgaon. However, a lot more needs to be done. Traffic management involves optimisation of resources. The traffic department here needs to be more imaginative in finding solutions to bottlenecks.
Q: Don't you think civic agencies are also to be blamed for design faults at major road intersections?
Officials anywhere in the world would have been taken to task for designing ill-conceived roads and crossings like we have here. For example, the u-turn at the toll plaza near Ambience Mall is hazardous for motorists. Regular communication is required among all the stakeholders. Traffic signals in Gurgaon have to be manned by cops and motorists ideally should themselves stick to discipline. In Delhi, we had a road safety and engineering committee. A meeting was held every month in which traffic police used to point out on-ground difficulties like potholes, electric poles obstructing traffic, lack of crossover facilities, ill-designed u-turns etc.
Q: What can be done to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists?
When it comes to accommodating the legitimate concerns of the pedestrians and cyclists, the approach of our authorities is atrocious. They forget that pedestrians and cyclists also use roads.
