Tribal woman dies in lock-up

A woman belonging to a tribal community died in police custody earlier this week, police said on Saturday. Her relatives have alleged that torture by police caused the death.

Gangubai Gavit, the woman, had been arrested from Dongripada of Khardi in Shahapur taluka for allegedly selling country liquor on Thursday. She was admitted to hospital as her health had deteriorated, and she died at Wokhardt Hospital at Mulund on Friday, police said.

Her son, Vilas Gavit, has lodged a complaint with Bhandup police alleging his mother died due to the torture while in the custody Shahapur police. The Bhandup police have registered a case of accidental death and transferred the probe to the Thane police, police sources said.
