"With the Independence Day approaching, the troops along the Line of Control have been placed on high alert to thwart any infiltration bid into the Valley," a defence spokesman said here.

He said the past fortnight has seen a spate of infiltration attempts especially in north Kashmir's Kupwara district which have been successfully foiled by alert troops.

"The security forces have jointly neutralised nine terrorists recently. Five of them have been identified as Pakistanis, including three divisional commanders and two battalion commanders," he said.

The spokesman said it seems that militants and their sponsors are trying to cause disturbances during the holy month of Ramzan and ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.

"This anti-people tactics of the terrorists and their sponsors must be thwarted by joint action of the awam (people) and the security forces," he added.
