Acting on a tip off, a joint operation party of police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Chamal-Chilli area, about 190 km from here, in Doda district on Sunday night, they said.

An encounter took place when militants fired on the party during search operation, SSP Doda, Prabhat Singh said, adding that two militants have been killed so far.

Brigadier General Staff (BGS), 16 Corps, Brig Gurdeep Singh told PTI that operations was still on and the two slain militants had been identified as Yasir Ahmed alais Mubasher and Mustaq Ahmed alais Tallah.

Both were commanders of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Brig Gurdeep said, adding that troops recovered two AK rifles and other explosives from them.

Security forces believe that about half a dozen more militants, including a top LeT commander Shah Din Khanday, are still hiding in natural caves in the area.

Additional troops have been rushed to the spot to strengthen the cordon.
