The Cheetah helicopter of the Army Aviation Corps crashed around 11 am at Sungra, some 200 km from Shimla, police said.

The names of the pilots would be released only after their families were informed about the accident, a defence official in New Delhi said.

The helicopter used for ferrying personnel and supplies had taken off from Jalandhar in neighbouring Punjab and crashed after its rotors got entangled in a span wire strung across two mountains, police said.

Span wires are used to convey goods-carrying trolleys from one hill to another in areas where roads cannot be constructed.

Rescue teams were despatched to the area where the helicopter crashed, officials said.
