A mob in central Assam’s Nagaon district thrashed three people on Monday evening for allegedly stealing a goat. Another person, accused of stealing a pair of slippers, was similarly killed in northeastern Assam’s Lakhimpur district a few hours later.

YT Gyatso, Nagaon superintendent of police, said the mob attacked the three men in Amlakhi Tea Estate while they were preparing a goat they had killed for a feast.

“The mob assaulted the trio and handed them over to the police later. One of them, an Adivasi youth identified as Bijoy Bhumij, succumbed to his injuries in the police station,” he said.

In the other incident, a mob clubbed one Joga Barua to death for allegedly stealing a pair of slippers from a temple in Lakhimpur’s Simaluguri.

“A group of locals took the man, injured, to the Simaluguri police outpost on Monday night. He became unconscious this (Tuesday) morning and was taken to the hospital but doctors declared him brought dead,” Lakhimpur superintendent of police, Brajenjit Singha, said.

On Sunday, a mob had hacked an alleged rape accused man to death in the state’s Karbi Anglong district. A few policemen were witness to that lynching.
