Angry over the incident, residents of at least three villages under Handia police station went berserk, torched three buses, damaged several others besides blocking the Allahabad-Varanasi railway track and the GT Road this afternoon.

They alleged that some tantriks were on the prowl and were sacrificing kids to appease the gods.

Police reportedly fired nearly 50 rounds in the air and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the agitated mob. In return villagers rained brickbats on the police, which had a tough time controlling the situation.

The two children identified as Santosh (8) and Rajesh (7) were reportedly playing outside the house last evening when they suddenly went missing. A search for them throughout the night went in vain.

Their bodies were fished out from a well near the GT road around 9 am today. What shocked the villagers was the fact that the children had not died due to drowning but were actually killed as was evident from the injury marks on their throats.

The presence of several tantriks in nearby Chak Sudarshan village and the reported disappearance of around two dozen children under mysterious circumstances last year doubled the suspicion of several agitators, including the family members, that the children had been killed by some tantrik to appease the gods.

They placed both the bodies on the GT Road and went wild torching vehicles and damaging window panes of several passing vehicles. They also blocked the Allahabad-Varanasi railway track at gate No 53 and made a vain bid to torch the SDM’s jeep.

The incident paralysed movement of vehicular traffic on the busy GT Road for nearly five hours.

SSP Vijay Singh Meena, who rushed to the spot, said the situation was under control as the agitators were forced to retrace their steps and lift the road and the rail blockade.

As regards the death of the two children, he said nothing could be said before an autopsy was carried out.

It may be mentioned this is the second incident in the district in the last two days. Only yesterday, bodies of two children cut to pieces and their bodies stuffed in gunny bags were recovered in Shankargarh. Here too residents went violent after the discovery of the bodies.

The family members of the children found dead in the well today had no enemies just like the parents of the children who were found murdered in Shankargarh yesterday.
