Defence sources said Manindra Rai allegedly opened fire on the security personnel when he was asked to stop his bicycle at abandoned Rupsi airport.
Rai died in retaliatory fire at about 3 am, sources said.
A US-made revolver with 3 live cartridges, a hand granade, a mobile phone set and a diary having phone numbers of ULFA insurgents were seized from him.
Rai was wanted in several cases of bomb blasts, kidnapping and extortion.
