ULFA militant killed in gunfight

Defence sources said Manindra Rai allegedly opened fire on the security personnel when he was asked to stop his bicycle at abandoned Rupsi airport.

A suspected ULFA militant was killed in a gunfight with a joint team of army and policemen at Gouripur in lower Assam's Dhubri district along Indo-Bangla border on Friday.

Defence sources said Manindra Rai allegedly opened fire on the security personnel when he was asked to stop his bicycle at abandoned Rupsi airport.

Rai died in retaliatory fire at about 3 am, sources said.

A US-made revolver with 3 live cartridges, a hand granade, a mobile phone set and a diary having phone numbers of ULFA insurgents were seized from him.

Rai was wanted in several cases of bomb blasts, kidnapping and extortion.
