The joint team, including six Jammu and Kashmir Rifles troops, during routine patrolling noticed an improvised explosive devise (IED) on the road at village Torani under Pengeri police station, Superintendent of Police Debojit Hazarika said.

The IED through a remote control device exploded metres away from the patrolling team prompting them to fire and they cordoned off the area, Hazarika said.

The ULFA terrorists fired upon them and in the ensuing encounter an ULFA insurgent identified as Jiten Mura was killed while the others fled away, he said.

A carbine was recovered from the slain ultra, the SP said and added, there was no casualty in the security forces team.

Tension prevails in the area as the local villagers protested against the firing and claimed that Mura was not an insurgent but a tea garden labourer.
