“Mahesh is having an extramarital affair and that was the reason behind the frequent fights between the couple,” said Sarang Awad, DCP, Ulhasnagar

He said five teams were working on the case. “Our first priority is to arrest the accused, who has escaped taking his revolver with him,” said Awad.

Bhavana’s brother, Manoj Chhabria, said that his sister used to complain about the behaviour of her husband and in-laws. “Two years ago, she left the Ahujas’ home and came to live with us,” he said. “She was with us for six months but then her in-laws and husband came to us, apologised and promised to treat her well.”

Two months ago, Bhavana complained to her parents that her mother-in-law had abused and beaten her. Her husband too used to torture her, said Chhabria. “Mahesh’s relatives told us that he was addicted to betting on cricket matches and had lost a huge sum in the World Cup final,” he added.
