FORMER CHIEF minister Uma Bharti today secured bail in the defamation suit filed against her by the chairman of Dainik Bhaskar Group of Publications, Ramesh Agrawal.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Anil Kumar Gupta granted her bail in the matter on personal bond and surety of Rs 3000 each. Her supporter Shaitan Singh Pal furnished bail for her.
Agrawal, in his defamation suit, had accused Uma Bharti of defaming him in a press conference by stating that the Dainik Bhaskar Group had taken a loan of Rs 12 crore from MP State Industrial Development Corporation (MPSIDC), which was not paid, and when a notice was issued to the Group in this regard during her stint as the Chief Minister, the group pleaded before her and had been after her ever since.
The press conference was telecast on TV channels and carried in newspapers, damaging reputation of the Group and its proprietors, Agrawal stated in his plaint.
Bharti, in her statement in the court, however, said that notice was indeed issued to Dainik Bhaskar Group for recovery of dues and that was what she had referred to in the press conference. But, by publishing a story that Uma Bharti had threatened to commit suicide if not reinstated as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dainik Bhaskar newspaper had definitely defamed her, she said.
