UN award for Kerala CM’s mass contact programme

Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, who completed two years of his second term last week, has won the United Nations Public Service Award for his mass contact programme in which he directly interacted with people of the state and addressed their grievances.

Chandy has bagged the first prize from the Asia Pacific region. The second place was bagged by South Korea’s Seoul Metropolitan Infrastructure Headquarters.

He will receive the award from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Bahrain on June 27. In 2003 the UN initiated this award as part of the world public service day observed on June 23.

Chandy had launched the mass contact programme in 2004 when he became the chief minister and he travelled to all the 14 districts in the state.
