Fernandes was to visit the state on Friday to discuss the situation arising out of Lok Sabha poll boycott call given by militants with Governor Arvind Dave and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.
The sources said the Defence Minister was to discuss security arrangements and deployment of troops on polling days with top security officials.
While first phase of polling would be held in Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat on April 20, the second phase polling would be conducted in Inner Manipur on April 26.
Major separatist United National Liberation Front (UNLF) had called for complete boycott of the upcoming polls to 'intensify revolutionary movement for an independent Manipur,' the sources added.
