Unique Storkes that impress Ghoshs

india Updated: Mar 25, 2004 18:42 IST

Most of us heard about three headed storks ( bird specie) in fairy tales and eventually dismissed their existence in the real world on growing up; but Kolkatta based artist Pulak Ghosh not only heard about them, but also featured them on his canvas. He has painted these fantasy birds for his show titled 'entanglements'. It started on December 2 at the Habiart gallery of India Habitat Centre. It will be on display till December 11,

Ghosh had heard of these 'unique' storks in childhood, but unlike most of us, he did not dismiss it as a fantasy. He researched about this bird specie and was overwhelmed to find about their existence in real world. He studied their habitat in the West America and immediately thought of featuring them on his canvas. For all the 29 paintings, he has painted three headed strokes.

"I read that this particular specie of bird tend to entangle themselves with one another with their long necks and in the process try to annihilate each other. This deadly love hate relationship dominated my mind for a long time," says Ghosh. In all his paintings he has shown these stokes try their best to separate from each other. He has not restricted his expression to one media alone. He has explored various form of art media ranging from oil on canvas to carving on stone. This is his maiden venture.

All these paintings are representatives of materialistic desires, as Ghosh explains. "We try to accumulate most of wealth and luxuries and try to denounce them at the same time for the sake of mental peace and satisfaction. It's a turf which we want to win and lose at the same time," philosophises Ghosh. He believes that the viewer will be able to relate these paintings to their intimate personal lives in politics, diplomacy and in society.
