Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Shah has blamed the UP government for “doctoring” the transcript of his speech.

He insisted that his “core appeal” to voters in his speeches at Bijnore and Shamli was to “resort to the ballot box for vindicating their grievances rather than resorting to retaliation”.

Replying on Shah’s behalf to the election commission notice, the BJP also advised the poll panel against acting under the model code of conduct against Shah since a criminal case had already been filed against him. “This surely will jeopardise the interest of the accused in getting proper justice,” reads the party’s reply to the commission.

Shah was accused of inciting people to take revenge for last year’s September riots in Muzaffarnagar by voting for the BJP, that would also bring down the “aMulla Mulayam Singh’s government”.

Insisting that the transcript provided by the “failed UP administration” was “doctored”, the BJP said the ruling dispensation had made it appear as if there was an exhortation to violence and revenge whereas he was only talking about change through vote.
