The Control of Organised Crime Bill-2007 was passed by voice vote in the UP Vidhan Sabha on Monday, even as the entire opposition walked out in protest, dubbing the Bill as “draconian, barbaric and worse than the martial law”.

Leader of the opposition and former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav opposed the bill saying that its sole intention was to settle scores with political rivals as it gave enormous powers to the police. He expressed apprehension that the provisions of the bill would be misused by the police and the party in power, as it gave almost no opportunity to the ‘culprit’ to defend himself.
