The raids were carried out in the backdrop of some political parties complaining to the EC that the hardcore criminals lodged in the jails could affect the Lok Sabha elections.

“The raids were conducted in 16 jails across the state to ensure that those lodged there should not run their gangs from there or affect the elections in any ways,” a senior police official said.

The raids were jointly conducted by district magistrates and senior police officials in Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Fatehgarh, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Meerut, Azamgarh, Bareilly, Muzaffarnagar, Ghazipur, Bulandshahar and Agra.
