In spite of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s refusal to accept Congress MP from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi’s demand for reduction of tax for the leather foot-ware industry, the state trade tax department has started working on a cut down on the rate of tax on leather shoes.

The department has decided to revise tax rates as proposed under the Value Added Tax (VAT) , for natural gas, detergent soaps and furnace oil also. Sources said the Rashtrapati Bhawan had also written to the state government suggesting it to revise the proposed tax rates. The President’s office suggested that tax rates under VAT be fixed on a par with those prevailing in neighbouring states.
