The panel has been formed to direct the policy of the Central Government for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12). The aim of the group is to make higher education more inclusive by providing the SC/ST, the OBC, women, the physically challenged and other disadvantaged groups with an opportunity in this field. Only 6 per cent of the population in India belonging to the relevant age group has excess to higher education.
Another objective of the panel is to make information communication technology (ICT) available to all educated youths of the country. The recommendations of this committee will also pave way to ensure that the people are equipped with better skills to deal with present-day jobs.
The committee will also address the problem of unevenness of infrastructure in the State and Central Universities.
Meanwhile, Prof Harshe was also made a member of the UGC’s advisory body in West Asian and African Studies.
Prof Harshe has many important works to his credit in this context and also happens to be the president of Indian Association of African Studies.
