The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has sought a report from the Gujarat government on this week's clashes in Vadodara sparked off by the demolition of a two-centuries-old dargah, its Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari said on Saturday.

"We have sought a report from the Gujarat government into the incident," he said in New Delhi.

Six people died and nearly 70, some of them policemen were injured as clashes broke out in the Gujarat city following demolition on Monday of a dargah by civic authorities in Vadodara.

The NCM had already recommended a judicial probe into what it called the use of excessive force by the state police while dealing with the protesters.

In its recommendation last month, the NCM called for a judicial inquiry into the Aligarh violence after it found the UP administration took no measures to prevent a communal flare-up despite clear signs of tension.
