Move out of the village or face the consequences.

This is what a khap panchayat allegedly told a couple, who belong to the same gotra, and its family in Sikandarpur Kakodi village in Ghaziabad, around 70 km from Delhi.

Sources in the police said the panchayat (village council) held continued meetings in the last four days and ordered social boycott of the couple. Sheetal Singh (21) and Sudhir Singh (24), who belong to the Jat community, got married after eloping from their village in 2009.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raghubir Lal told Hindustan Times that soon after their marriage, the girl's family had left the village out of fear of social boycott.

“They also lodged an abduction case against the man in January 2009 against which the couple managed to obtain a High Court order,” he added.

After the court’s order, the couple decided to move back to their village but the panchayat have allegedly issued threats to the couple. The family of the couple refused to speak to media.

Fearing deterioration in law and order situation in the area, the SSP has ordered deployment of police personnel at the man’s house.

“We have also ordered action against the people who have held panchayat and would bound down them with Rs 50,000 each so that law and order situation remains under control,” the SSP added.
