THE STRIKING students of Institute of Medical Sciences-Banaras Hindu University will now attempt to garner the support of the rural populace against the union government’s decision to enhance reservation in Central academic institutes. The medicos will embark on an ‘anti-reservation rath yatra’ in the rural areas of Varanasi from Monday.

Meanwhile, their anti-reservation strike continued for the 13th consecutive day on Saturday. The stir has been launched under the banner of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA). A team of students visited villagers in different development blocks of Varanasi on Friday. “We are contacting village chiefs and other common villagers and informing them about the decison to take out the rathyatra,” said RDA vice-president Dr Mithilesh Pandey.

Dr Pandey said the medical students would organise meetings in villages during the yatra. He added medical students would examine patients free of cost in villages during the yatra. A signature campaign would also be launched.

The RDA members said they were committed to continuing their indefinite strike.

Five undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Institute of Medical Sciences continued their 48-hour relay hunger strike.

However, the medical students continued to attend patients at their parallel OPD outside the OPD of Sir Sunderlal Hospital in BHU.

MEERUT MEDICOS have a twin concern. They are worried about the impact of the fresh reservation proposals and the patients who are suffering due to the ongoing strike at LLRM Medical College. The medicos say general category students will find it tougher to clear the entrance examinations from the next year.

The medicos, who have been on an indefinite hunger strike since Thursday, are running a parallel OPD for patients.
