AN EXPERIENCED administrator and legal expert Firdous A Wani took over as the first regular Registrar of Allahabad Central University on Friday morning. Wani met the AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe at his office and then formally took charge from the Acting Registrar Prof US Rai. AU Proctor Prof Jata Shankar, AU Controller of Examinations Prof HS Upadhyaya and the Chief Public Information Officer Prof Amrendra Singh were present on the occasion.

Wani met the AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe at his office and then formally took charge from the Acting Registrar Prof US Rai. Within hours of taking charge, Wani, who was serving as Registrar at the Srinagar National Institute of Technology since September 1993 before deciding to join AU, along with Prof US Rai represented the varsity in the Allahabad High Court in connection with a case and later attended a meeting in the Science Faculty too.
Firdous A Wani, has a BSc degree besides also having LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees. Having a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration with specialisation in human resource management, he is presently also pursuing his PhD on a part-time basis in the field of 'Legal regime of DNA Technology: Issues and Challenges for India'.
At NIT-Srinagar, Wani engaged management classes of senior semester engineering students besides also teaching MBA students of University of Kashmir and acting as a resource person in Entrepreneurship Development Programmes.
There he also served as member and member-secretary of various committees including the Finance Committee, Building and Works Committee, the Senate, Library Committee, Selection Committee for various posts, Grievance and Disciplinary Committee as well as on the Benevolent Fund Scheme Governing Body.
Wani has around 30 research publications to his credit and is member of various professional bodies like the Indian Institiute of Public Administration (New Delhi) and International Association of Historians of Asia.
As the news of Wani's finally joining at AU spread on the campus, the welcome messages started to come in. Member of the AU Executive Council Sunit Vyas and president of Allahabad University Teachers' Association (AUTA-Y) Dr Yogeshwar Tiwari both welcomed Firdous Wani as the new Registrar of AU. While Vyas said that Wani is known to go by the book and expressed hope that he would follow the Central University Act and statutes in the welfare and progress of the university.
Firdaus Wani, said Dr Tewari, is a scholar of law and the same is evident when the Government of India appointed him to draft the common statutes for all the IITs in India.
"This is reflection of the deep confidence that the Union Government has reposed in him.
His appointment will go a long way in the better comprehension of the Act and Statutes of Allahabad University and thus removing uncertainties which have been prevailing for a long time," he said.
Dr Tiwari expressed hope that the rule of law will be restored and things will function in the university as per the Act and Statutes.
