Delhi Police spotted Dinesh Gujjar when he came to meet an associate near the Netaji Subhash Institute in Dwarka at around 11.00 pm on Thursday. They asked him to surrender, but Gujjar opened fire instead. He was fatally wounded in the police crossfire.

Gujjar was rushed to the Safdarjung hospital, where he was declared "brought dead".

A 9mm pistol was recovered from him.

Gujjar was wanted in 13 cases of murder and extortion in Delhi alone. He was one of the six gangsters involved in a shootout in Jan 2005 Connaught Place in which a businessman was killed.

He was then arrested but was soon released on bail. Gujjar had been on the wanted list ever since.
