‘We have identified dark, vulnerable stretches’
Maheshwar Dayal, Joint Commissioner of Police, speaks to HT about the safety and security of Gurgaon after dusk.india Updated: Jun 02, 2013 01:19 IST
Why is police presence so low at night except at select major trouble spots like MG Road?
This is not the case. We do give special focus to MG Road as it is the city’s pubbing hotspot but PCR vans are constantly patrolling all stretches of the city through the night.
The Sector 56 and 57 link roads to the Gurgaon-Faridabad expressway have become a carjacking-prone stretch since it provides an easy escape route. Any focus of police on such stretches?
PCR vans from respective police stations do keep a strict vigil on these stretches and we have foiled several robbery and carjacking plans here.
The area near Leisure Valley Grounds in Sector 29 is also crime prone despite it being located in the heart of the city. Why?
PCR vans from the Sector 29 police station do keep a watch, besides a special team has been stationed behind the Crown Plaza hotel. All these stretches are crime prone as there are no streetlights. We have written to the civic authorities to improve lighting at such places.
Gurgaon has several dark stretches. Have the police been able to identify them all?
We have undertaken a special drive to do that. The respective police stations have been asked to identify dark stretches. We have already identified roads around the Leisure Valley in Sector 29, Sector 56 extension road, link roads to Gurgaon-Faridabad Expressway, Palam Vihar, Golf Course road, Sector 51 road near Mayfield Gardens, Artemis road which connects to Wazirabad and sector 57, Subhash Chowk to Sector 38 and a few others. Besides enhanced policing at these stretches, we will also push the civic authorities to install streetlights there.
As no public transport is available after 10pm, commuters have to depend on private and BPO cabs which are highly unsafe. How will you deal with this?
We have identified vulnerable spots from where unsuspecting commuters take lifts in private cabs. These are Iffco Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Shankar Chowk and MG Road. PCR vans are usually stationed here at night to keep a check on criminal elements.
