What makes for a lean 'n trim Govt

The Economic Survey for the last year has warned the Govt about increase in fiscal deficit. This as well as corruption can be eliminated if the Govt sheds its fat and abolishes licence, quota and permit system. The Govt should have only a few ministries like Home, Defence, Finance, etc. and abolish others such as coal, mines, steel, petroleum, fertilisers, etc.

The Economic Survey for the last year has warned the Government about increase in fiscal deficit. The fiscal deficit as well as corruption can be eliminated to a large extent if the Government sheds its fat and abolish all license, quota and permit systems because the lesser the number of babus, the lesser the corruption.

All the Public Sector Undertakings should be disinvested immediately as they are not serving any useful purpose. They are merely there to serve the ministers and other Government officers of the department concerned. Moreover, the IAS people who generally head these undertakings are not oriented for business work and cannot do justice to their job.

The Government should have with it only a few departments like Home, Defence, Finance, etc. which have to be kept under Government for regulatory purposes and maintenance of law and order and security of the country but it should abolish such departments as coal, mines, steel, petroleum, fertilisers, etc.

When everything would be open to competition, it would do two things. First of all, competition would produce excellence and secondly, the rates of the products would also be cheap so that one would have best quality things at cheapest rates.

Of course, Government would be required to take welfare measures in the field of health care and education.
