Renu Jogi, wife of critically injured former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, has quit her government job to campaign for her husband for the coming general election.

Renu Jogi was an associate professor in the ophthalmology department of the government hospital here. She faxed her resignation to Chhattisgarh health secretary Alok Shukla from Mumbai, where her husband was shifted for treatment of injuries he suffered in a car accident on Sunday at Gariaband, 135 km from here.

Renu Jogi is expected to hit the campaign trail in Mahasamund, from where her husband is contesting against former central minister VC Shukla, the candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"She will carry the message of her husband to the voters of Mahasamund that God saved Jogi only to serve the voters and work for their betterment till his last breath," a Jogi aide said.

The Congress will also distribute videos and audiocassettes of Jogi's speech appealing for votes.

Voting in Mahasamund and the 10 other Lok Sabha constituencies of Chhattisgarh will be held in the first phase of polling on April 20.

Last week, the BJP had complained to Chief Election Commissioner TS
Krishnamurthy during his visit here that Renu Jogi was distributing sunglasses and providing free eye treatment to voters in Mahasamund. Krishnamurthy had said the allegation would be probed.

Police, meanwhile, have registered a case against Shabbir, who was driving the vehicle in which Jogi was travelling when it met with the accident.

Shabbir and Chhattisgarh Congress leader Mehtarlal Sahu were also injured in the accident. They are being treated at a private hospital here.
