Will Aamir, Kajol set celluloid on fire?
In Fanaa, they play characters that are an extension of their real personalities.india Updated: May 08, 2006 16:38 IST
What happens when two accomplished actors come together on screen (opposite each other for the first time) after having spent years in the film industry?
It raises expectations and generates hype. And when the two are diametrically opposite to each other in real life and play themselves on screen, expectations pile up.
This is the case with the Aamir Khan-Kajol pairing in Kunal Kohli’s Fanaa (the year’s biggest love story). The hype around the film is justifiable more so because of the casting. On one hand, you have Aamir Khan- organised, sophisticated, methodical and extremely particular about what he does. Where as,Kajol is known for her pranks on the sets.
|Niche actors Aamir and Kajol are as different as chalk and cheese in their real lives. Will their chemistry work in Fanaa?|
Talk to people who have worked with him and you get an insight into his character. Says Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who directed him in
Rang De Basanti
, "It was an experience of a kind, something I have never had before with anybody. Having Aamir means he is there for the whole year for you, shooting for the film and then the next two months he keeps himself free for anything that has to be done for the film."
Sources close to Kajol say she is a spontaneous person and actor. She improvises while giving a shot and prepares on the sets. "She hates rehearsals. However, despite not giving rehearsals she comes out with a better shot every time. She improvises on the sets," says the source. Kajol mixes with a group Aamir is not very close to- Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan and others. In fact, Aamir and Kajol were not known to be great friends. They have acted together in just one film together- Indra Kumar’s
(but they were not cast opposite each other).
So, when two different personalities meet, doesn’t that create confusion on the sets? A source close to the artists who was present on the sets says there was no clash of personalities. "They clicked like a house on fire. In fact, Aamir took Kajol to Purana Quilla in Delhi and showed her the place," says the source.
The two actors may be different individuals but have something in common- spontaneity. "His approach is peculiar. Everything goes into his sub-conscious. But once he is giving the shot, he just reacts to the moment," says Mehra.
more interesting is that their characters in the film are an extension of their real personalities- Kajol’s is innocent, bubbly and instinctive, whereas Aamir’s is confident and focused.
It is this contrast that has the industry waiting for
release with anticipation. Trade expert Taran Adarsh is confident of the film’s prospects. “The Kajol-Aamir pairing will help the film get tremendous openings,” he feels.
